While visiting San Juan Island for a few hours we weren't sure quite where to eat. We got a recommendation from the visitors center to checkout Market Chef. Best meal we've had in the last 5 days since being in Washington. High quality ingredients great service creative menu. They offered unique sandwiches and food in the deli case in which you can create your own home cooked meal. Lots of locals also seemed to visit during lunch which was a good sign that it was a great restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

We had fresh Crab Cakes and delicious sandwiches to go that we took on the ferry. I highly recommend they also have a deli case with home made salads and chicken etc..

This is a great place for lunch and recommended by locals. The special eggplant Parmesan sandwich was wonderful and so was my husband's turkey sandwich. Everything is very fresh and homemade. Going back for Friday only fish tacos. Friendly, casual place. Only open til 4:00. Highly recommend!

My wife had one of their salads and raved on and on about it long enough that I decided to give this 5 stars, although my burger was just so so. I am a picky eater, and there wasn't much on the menu that seemed to my tastes, so I went with the special of the day, this burger, and was less than enthralled. I do think that the other routine things that they offer, if it's up to your tastes, would be quite good here. Check out their menu first, and be weary of the burger.

My bride and I often have lunch here, food is consistently good. My wife's fav are the fish tacos while mine is the crab cakes. Grilled veggies are excellent. Highly recommended

There are many good restaurants in Friday Harbor; this one stood out. My sandwich (cheddar, apple slices, sprouts, & sunflower seeds on artisan bread) was the best I've eaten in a long time. Husband liked his roast beef as well. This spot is bright & cheery, with a tempting deli case, baked goods, & a view of the harbor.

Loved the food and menu. Farm to table ingredients. They have some both outdoor and indoor seating. I sat out front and enjoyed people watching and the warm sun on a July afternoon.

My niece and I were browsing next door at the book shop and got hungry so we popped next door to check it out. I have to say right here that I'm not a 'Foodie'. I'm just looking for a good turkey sandwich, maybe a little potato salad. I'll do the occasional aioli but I don't do chutney. This is a chutney kind of place. If you like chutney, you'll love this place. If you've got money to burn AND are a foodie, this place is your heaven. Not mine though! High end flavors with a price tag to match. It had a bunch of different salads in the deli case too but it was all stuff that I wasn't quite comfortable eating. Not one bit of potato salad or cole slaw. It's small with a little outdoor seating. Just up the hill from the ferry landing. If you're a meat a potatoes kind of person, or like I, are just looking for a good turkey sandwich, go elsewhere. This place isn't for our kind! The book shop next door is basically a half priced books store. Worth wandering in.

This was one of two places within walking distance that was open for a late lunch when we arrived on the ferry. Very nice selection with lots of healthy choices. Staff was friendly and helpful. Outdoor dining looked inviting, but couldn't accommodate our group of 6 without lots of moving tables and chairs, so we ate inside. Pricey, but a fun local experience.

The seared greens salad was excellent. I also got the crab cake, which had too much breading and not enough crab. The kids got plain turkey sandwiches and were happy. Inside was loud and crowded, but the porch tables were quieter. I would eat there again.

We stopped here to get sandwiches to go before heading on the Transit shuttle out to Lime Kiln State Park. The workers were very friendly and accomodating and the sandwiches were delicious!

My wife and I visited SJI for a short vacation. During a kayak trip we asked the guide for suggestions for restaurants and Market Chef came up. It seemed obvious that the locals were well aware of this place and some visitors were finding their way there too. We had a couple of sandwiches with side simple salads. The bread was great and the sandwiches were very good. You could tell everything was fresh and well executed. Take a break from the fish and chips and give Market Chef a try.

The Market Chef was a fun place to try. My husband had a grilled cheese sandwich and a crab cake. He really liked the sandwich but said the crab cake was just okay. I had "My Sister's Favorite Sandwich" which was interesting. It tasted good which is the important part, but I would have never thought to combine those ingredients. Getting there at the right time is important though. Luckily we did, but halfway through our meal a lot of people showed up, and it got crowed quick. After everyone ordered and sat down though, it didn't seem nearly as crowded.

Great soup, sandwich, deli and cookie spot right up the hill from the ferry landing. Excellent food, we always try to stop here after going to our fav used book store Serendipity next door. Don't miss this for a fantastic lunch, and don't miss the key lime shortbread cookies!

We missed the crowd since we enjoyed our lunch late. The lentil & bacon soup was the best I've had. "My Sister's Favorite Sandwich" was the most creative & delicious veggie/fruit sandwich I've had. My wife's arugula artichoke pasta & Turkey sandwich was delicious. Oh yea... the staff are great & the place has character. Wish the weather had allowed dining outside. We ate here because of Lonely Planet's review. Do yourself a favor and eat here.

On a trip with my mother and the Market Chef was recommended to us by our Concierge. It was great! Everything is fresh and house made. Their special sandwich of the day was a Texas style brisket sandwich. We didn't try it, but at s Texan, the brisket looked fantastic. We had the Nueske's Amazingly Good Applewood smoked ham sandwich and the My Sister's Favorite Sandwich as well as the fresh fruit and the beets with lime and cilantro. Everything was amazing and the place is really charming. HIGHLY recommended.
