We started our night with a drink at the bar -- happy hour prices were in effect, the bar was not crowded, and the bartender was friendly and helpful. Proceeded to dinner (party of 5) in the dining room at the back of the place. Nice airy room with large window/doors, and the tables were nicely placed so we weren't on top of our neighbor. There is the option to dine al fresco, but it was a sultry evening and we chose the air conditioning. The staff is very helpful, and the food was excellent! Both the restaurant and bar were very clean and I can't wait to go back.

Bad over priced food Trying to be fancy but just a dump with a bad atmosphere I would go only if you like wasting money and like bad food

This was an outstanding experience, everything was done very creatively and the food was absolutely delicious. Farm to table with extraordinary skill, and very accommodating to food allergy issues.

A slow Sunday, so we and a few others had the place to ourselves. Bartenders were so attentive, knew their stuff and provided tastes of wines before we committed. I'm not a cocktail person, but now I am sold thanks to them. Excellent recommendations and cocktail construction. Appetizers, salads, chicken and agnolotti were superb (wish the latter was a larger portion, but it was excellent). Dessert and post-prandial libations were perfect. Go off peak. This is a GREAT place right in my own neighborhood pocket.

We were recently in Philadelphia for 2.5 weeks while a family member was in the hospital. While the trips back and forth from the hospital sucked we were lucky enough to learn that our family member lives on the same block as this gem. It soon became our home away from home. We visited the bar 4 (I think) times during our stay. The bartenders (especially Jesse) were so welcoming that we never made it to a table and just hung out at the bar each time. We managed to eat and drink our way through the menu. They have a good selection of (~8-10) beers on tap plus more available in bottle or can. And do a nice job with cocktails. While the wine was also good I thought the pours were a bit slim for the cost. The food was great! I don't think we hit a dud during our many visits. The only complaint I had was a few things were on the salty side. The standouts were the beef tartar and all of the pastas. Also loved the apple fritters! Yum! And they have great happy hour specials where many of the appetizer prices are really slashed down to $5-7.

Great place!!! Farm to table menu. The bread and tomatoes were very good. The apple and butternut squash soup was out of this world. What's melding of flavors. Loved it. We split that dish and they brought it out in two bowls. We followed that with a pasta dish. It had squash in it as well along with some blue cheese crumbles. It wasn't a ravioli. It was a flat noodle. Sorry I can't remember the name. But it was excellent. You can order a half or whole. We had the half and the whole would have been better to split. My entree was absolutely perfect!!!!! Prime rib cap. It melted in my mouth. Cooked perfectly. My girlfriend had the roasted chicken and it was amazing. How they had it so juicy with crispy skin had us scratching our heads. This place does it right!!!! Can't wait to go back. Service was excellent too!!!

This is a delicious and fun restaurant in Queen Village near the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Southwark is only a block away from South Street. It has an old style feel to it with a long and winding oak bar as you enter the restaurant. The bar service is fantastic. The bartender will make you a customized cocktail or you can choose from a large selection on their menu. The results are excellent. I had a vodka martini with a hint of sherry in it. Who would have thought that combination would be so good! The restaurant is simple but well staffed and quiet. The food is some of the best I have had in Philadelphia. They concentrate on local and seasonal produce which makes this locavore restaurant stand out. The menu is compact but that is good because each dish is complex and yet simple in its presentation. Our party of 5 started with an assortment of dishes including steak tartar, fried green tomatoes, fresh pasta with bleu cheese and lamb bacon, a salad with peaches, onions, and arugula, and fresh baked bread. For entrees, roasted chicken with a crispy skin au jus, fresh Mahi Mahi, and another fresh pasta dish. Desserts were spectacular and all home made. It is rare that a restaurant scores from drinks to dessert but Southwark does it all so well. This place is a gem and worth the trip for dinner or drinks.

This is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at! You can tell the food was prepared with much thought and care! The flavors blend together so well and make your mouth water! We had a lamb dish that was amazing! My family is not that big on lamb, but they went crazy for it! Cannot say enough about this place! Ambiance is great as well and very friendly staff! You are making a mistake if you do t try this restaurant!

We tried this place on a whim because we couldn't get in to Vernick or Talulas. I'm glad we did. They had good selection of wines, and the waiter was knowledgeable about them as well as his rye and bourbon selections. Starters: The cheeses were great, they had a nice artisanal and local selection. The hummus has a light lemony flavor that makes it rather delightful. Entrees: Eat the chicken. I am not really sure how to describe the chicken and keep the description rated PG. The flavor is out of this world. I did not know chicken could taste like this. The skin is light and crispy, and it must be soaked in butter or something. It doesn't just fall apart it shatters. The meat was so juicy and tender it was amazing.

The new owners of Southwark have really done something impressive with this classic Philadelphia gem. They are also obviously really put a lot of thought into what was lacking in the Philadelphia food scene. The chef is putting out food that cannot be found elsewhere in town, wonderful handmade pasta's, house made cheeses and breads, some of the best fish I have ever eaten. The staff is charming and efficient. The atmosphere is warm and elegant. I live 4 blocks away and feel I have found my new place!

Stopped here for drinks. Service and cocktails were top-notch. Would definitely return. Great place for drinks, small bites or full dinner.

This is a great place to go on a date or a small group of people. They have a great atmosphere and it's nice to be able to hear your companions. The drinks are quite good and they have a decent selection of beers and ciders on tap. They also have a full kitchen, so if some people in your party want to snack (or even have a full meal) you're covered. That being said, the proprietors get a little cranky if you arrive with a larger group. So if you're looking for a place for a medium or large size get together, this is not the right place.

Have been there many times. Always great food - interesting and delicious. Always great service - attentive without being intrusive. Nice setting with beautiful garden seating and the staff is great about letting you sit outdoors even if the weather is not perfect.

We just had another wonderful meal at Southwark. The cocktails, wine, and beer here are terrific, and the food is consistently delicious and beautifully prepared. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Southwark should be on your list of favorites.

Aside from great food and very good service, it was such a pleasure to be in a restaurant in which the noise was not overwhelming. I am soooooo tired of Starr restaurants where the noise is DEAFENING! Anyway about this place. The service was attentive without being overbearing or cutesy. The timing was perfect, and the waiter was knowledgeable. The wine list small but well chosen. I had the liver with carmelized onions which was absolutely perfect and my husband had the pork chop which he says was tender and very flavorful. He also had something called Scotch eggs which he liked to well he refused to share with me, even when I offered him some of my salad. All in all a very nice evening in which we could eat and relax without being bombarded by noise levels that are headache inducing.

Went out with a friend last night for some nice drinks and a few bites to eat. Heard a lot of good buzz about this place and both my friend and I enjoy a nice drink well made. The drinks were good here and out server was very nice and accommodating. However, I have two complaints, the food and the attitude of the bar tender. 1. The food we ordered was not that good. We ordered a mixed Charcuterie plate, escargots, and roasted potatoes. The charcuterie plate looked like the apprentice in the kitchen threw it together. There was a pate of sorts and three very small and thin sliced pieces of salami for the meat. The cheese was OK. Before I ordered the roasted potatoes I asked if they were crispy and I was told that they were. When they came out they were large and soft (not a crisp on any of them). They did taste very good, but this was not what we anticipated at all. The escargot had no flavor at all! Nothing else needs to be said. Finally, when I approached the bartender to ask for a suggestion of straight rye, he was very proud to tell me that Southwark has the biggest selections of rye by the glass in the country. When I asked to explain the differences between some of them his response was a cold "this will take longer than 15 minutes" and he did not explain. So I asked him his favorite and ordered it. I would understand this response, if this place was packed, But the bar was about 20% full of people when I asked. Overall, not a great experience so we left after 2 drinks.

I love it here. A lot. They offer vintage cocktails, made quite well. Backed up by great service and amazing food. Their soups are velvety wonders, appetizers are plentiful and interesting. Haven't had dinner or dessert there yet. This is a perfect place to spend time with people you like, foodies, good conversationalists, etc. It's warm and dark inside and feels a little retro. My kind of place. Can't wait to go back.

I can't comment on the food, but Southwark makes the best perfect Manhattan! The bartenders obviously take their craft very seriously and it is a pleasure to watch them at work. This is a great place to go for before, or after dinner cocktails.
