Many romantic dinners here. The staff once called us "the couple that everyone wants to be".

A cozy gastropub perfect for winter dining. There's always a selection of eccentric regulars and everything on the menu is good.

Cozy and delicious gastropub. It's changed a lot over the years but kept its soul.

After doing the highline, we decided to grab a bite to eat. After a short walk, we saw the Tavern on Jane. We saw some men in suits leaving, so thought we’d give it a go. As it’s a few days before Halloween, the staff were getting into the spirit by adding decorations. We waited a while to be served, but were happy to wait. The lady serving behind the bar was very friendly to the few people who were sat drinking at the bar. After ordering our drinks, we took a high top table and reviewed the menu. I was surprised at how reasonable the prices were. I went for a burger with home cut fries. My other half had the sirloin steak with fries and aioli sauce. They came quite quickly and both dishes were very tasty. The burger wasn’t at all greasy like so many are. It was cooked just right and had a slight charred flavour. The steak looked delicious (and was only a few dollars more than the burger). I’d have no hesitation in recommending the Tavern. Looking at the crowd, you could tell there were regulars there for lunch, which is always a good sign.

We chose this tavern for lunch as it was close the highline and Chelsea market. Great food and people, felt very authentic and local. Reasonable prices.

The Tavern on Jane (I.e.street) at 31 8th Ave. was a paddock in the 1840s and has been a local pub for 23 years. My wife and I go there often just as the dinner hour opens. There is always a good bar crowd of locals, and the restaurant has its specials as well as the standard fare of burgers and fries (excellent), salads (I especially like their Caesar salad), pizzas, pastas, salmon, hanger steal, etc.. portions are ample and the chef Josh La Baide goes beyond the ordinary with touches like crisped onions on top of a Mac and Cheese. Desserts are sinful but delicious. It is a restaurant where you can actually talk to one another without having to shout. It s a relatively quiet haven and there is always an exhibition of local art work on the walls. The service is very friendly and attentive. There is a room for a larger group. We ve been coming there for years and have never been disappointed. There may be a television over the bar, but if there is one, it is unobtrusive as I can t remember it!

I love the the Tavern on Jane. It's easy, relaxed, great food with a vibrant, but subdued pub scene. The staff are super nice and service is excellent. Food is fantastic. Mainly pub food and the buffalo chicken wrap and hamburgers are fantastic. Salads are good too. Have wide variety of option, which is nice. You can go as a couple, with friends or family, it's an equally great place to try out. Highly recommend.

wow! our server was out of this world. We were a party of 16 that they were able to accommodate on very short notice. They gave us a private room and set up the tables for us, however, we wanted them to be a little more conversation and proceeded to move all the tables in several set ups, until we found one we liked. The server was totally fine with this, and just waited patiently for us to complete our renovation of her space. She was top notch, and ran that room like a pro, professional, efficient and served us quickly and was very accommodating. It's a low key place, but really homey, and great food.

I almost hate to write about this cozy, somewhat quiet (for a Tavern) and delicious hideaway. When I'm in New York and need a solid, creative meal in a warm environment, I default to The Tavern on Jane. The wine is good, the food is delightful and the service never disappoints. I've had burgers, salmon and steak with frittes. It's all good. And I've run into a journalist, a psychiatrist and numerous other single diners who wanted to chat. Great for couples, too.

Met a group of friends at the Tavern to catch up. We enjoyed the setting, the drinks and food. The service was accurate - but the waiter seemed like he was the only one serving the entire place. The windows were operable - which was a nice way to cool things off when necessary.

This is a local favorite and one of the oldest bars in the West Village. Sit at the bar and you will end up meeting someone with an interesting story. The bar staff are friendly and it is a fun relaxed local bar feel!

We found that nice place by chance when we were walking in the street in the middle of the afternoon. Entering there was very pleasant as the ambiance was warm and the personnel, very nice and welcoming. My friend had only a dessert but I ordered a fish and chip plate that was delicious (not to greasy). We both were very happy about our experience.

We wandered in off the street at about 6:30 PM on a Saturday night and were lucky to snag a table. Ordered the "general's wings" as an appetizer and they were excellent. I had the sweet potato risotto (which actually featured braised short ribs more prominently than sweet potatoes). Also wonderful, although I couldn't eat it all after the wings. My girlfriend had several sides and enjoyed them. A lively spot, with a neighborhood feel to it... I couldn't quite figure out the wait staff system, as we seemed to be helped by two different people, and we weren't sure if they were communicating to each other. But we were definitely taken care of.

We were visitinng NYC and our friend took us to this restaurant. We took the subway and got off one block from the place. It is a small restaurant and it sits on the corner of a quiet neighborhood. The place is charming in an old world-like way. We thought the food was excellent and our waitperson was first class. She attended to our every need. We sat close to other tables and the table next to us joined us in our conversation as they couldn't help but hear our talk. They were wonderful New Yorker and this was part of what made our evening so enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for those who want a quiet evening with good food and pleasant atmosphere.

The moment we stepped into Jane's, we knew we had found a gem! The bar and restaurant were both buzzing! We were seated along the banquette, at a sweet little table for two amongst other couples. It is a very intimate environment. We started off with the calamari served with a roasted tomato wasabi dip (to die for), then shared the sweet potato risotto with braised short ribs and brown sage butter, and the evening's pasta special, lobster ravioli. They were both equally devine! Throughout our meal, we sipped on a nice bottle of Napa pinot noir (very reasonable and varied wine selection). The service was very attentive but casual. Just our style. We wanted to find a spot with a lot of locals, as we're from Toronto, and this was it! Too stuffed for dessert! We will definitely be back! Thanks to the staff for making our 25th Anniversary a memorable one!

I love Jane street, it's full of fun old restaurants and bars that really epitomize what's great about the west village. Tavern is no exception as its casual but elegant menu has something for everyone. I really think the tuna club is my favorite and it's just an excellent idea.

We stopped here for a drink and ended up staying for the evening. Great range of drink from larger to spirits. Friendly staff and good service helped create a great atmosphere. We did not have a full meal but had some chips but the menu looked great.

Stopped off here after a show at the Village Vanguard on our way back to the Jane Hotel up the road. We didn't eat, but had a few (too many) drinks. Some whiskey, a glass of wine, a bottle of lager. Enjoyed it, atmosphere was great. Very friendly clientele. Had to have a chuckle about the guy who warned me there was a paper hand towel floating in one of the toilets; he seemed unduly concerned and has clearly never been in a boozer in Rotherham on a friday night.

Tavern on Jane is really a great place to go on a chilly winter night or a fall evening. They have a few fireplaces going and comfort food galore. The Raspberry Habanero wings are awesome! So is the Yellowfin tuna club. Highly recommend!

Disappointed in the food at the Tavern on Jane. The restaurant was crowded, as it was one of the few restaurants open on the night of the recent snow storm, so I should cut it some slack. Still, the food was only so-so.

Realiably tasty dishes in a warm atmosphere. I love the fish tacos. My partner the burgers. Nice to have a neighborhood meeting place in the west village.
