Went here with my husband for a belated Valentines Day dinner. The place looks quite small and we were seated at a small table by the window. I understand their is a large outdoor space but it was February so I don't think it was open. The service was a little leisurely, but that might have been due to our table being sort of hidden behind the bar. But everyone we interacted with was very friendly and responsive. We received bread and olive oil before the meal and a free cheesecake dessert, which was delicious. And not just because it was free. When I wavered between two types of wine I was given a substantial taste of each, which I didn't ask for but was very nice. At first I thought a glass of wine was expensive but you get a little carafe that actually amounts to two glasses. The pasta we had was cooked perfectly and tasty and our steaks were also good. An appetizer we had of prosciutto and fig toast was not entirely to my liking (very salty and a little gamey) but I think that was just a matter of taste. We lingered a while over our free dessert and coffee and never felt rushed to pay or vacate our table. I can whole-heartedly recommend giving this place a try.

Dine here with a lot or a few friends and family. The staff is always very friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome there. The food is great for sharing and you'll find some of your favorite comfort food and portions easy to share. Nice wine selection and served chilled just like I like it. The space was renovated and it is beautifully lit, and the table spaced to allow for intimate dinners and they open the outdoor space when the weather permits.

We were a table of 4 the Saturday after Christmas. We arrived on a reservation at 7:30 were promptly seated and the dining room was very empty. We took out time catching up with old friends so we did not notice the slow service. Wine list had some economy priced bottles and an expanded list offered more expensive options as well. We share some antipasti; Asparagras Fries; Calamari and Proscutto. The portions were small for sharing and I did not care for the Calamari - almost no breading. We ordered two mid-level bottles of red Italian wines. For the mains we ordered the Duck Ravioli, Wild Boar Lasagna, Pappardelle Short Ribs and Tagliatelle Bolognese everyone enjoyed their food and the pasta was fresh made. My Lasagna was maybe 10 thin pasta layers with boar and cheese mixed in each layer. very flavorful. We ordered coffee and they delivered two complementary deserts to share. The restaurant filled up as we sat there. It is a very small narrow room with open brick face wall on one side. There is a back area and I have been told they have a outside garden - unfortunately we did not visit. All in all a very enjoyable dinner, good food and great company. Service was slow for a very light crowd but food was worth the wait.

I've dined here on two special occasions and both times the restaurant was a treat. Each item in the five-course prix fixe is tasty, though too much food for me. Traditional Italian food prepared with fresh ingredients and herbs. Ambiance is comfortable too (lots of photos of Sophia Loren).

This gem of a restaurant has an incredible selection of absolutely delicious dishes. All their pastas are made fresh and being a person that has tried every one, I can assure you...solid all around. Great for an intimate evening or for large groups, the space while moderate in size is very accommodating from a nice dinner for 2 to groups of 20 or more (Just booked a group of 20 recently). Outdoor or indoor, they've got both! Truly affordable pricing that won't break the bank and leave you full and satisfied! Now the wine is something you've got to try. All Italian wines first of all and all hand selected by the owner of the establishment that balances taste with variety. Not only are they generally affordable but the the owner is extremely knowledgeable. In all the times I have been here I have rarely made the selection of a wine myself. Just describe the type of wine you want (color, type, body, flavors, price range etc...) and they'll likely hit it spot on. Becomes a bit of an adventure because you'll likely not have heard of many of these wines...but gain a new appreciation for something you've never tried before. I hope everyone on this site gets a chance to check out this place! And when you're there...ask for Alberto ;-).

The food is really really good. Everyone loved their appetizer and their entree. There were only two waiters who worked very hard but you could tell they were overwhelmed serving multiple tables and managing a small bar at the front. There was also no hostess when we walked in. The pictures online show a cover for the patio but that was recently taken down. That didn't help last night in the rain! Overall, this is a good place that you should definitely check out. If this place fixed some of the above items it would be a new East Village gem.

Booked for wedding Rehersal dinner for 18 people, staff coped well with timely serving of drinks and food.Guests chose varied dishes from the menu this did not phase the staff. Italian twist made for original feel to choice.V reasonably priced. Plates clear at end-now thats a great advert !! Garden with lovely weather gave the perfect backdrop. Thank you.

Between 11th and 12th streets on the west side of Avenue B, it is easy to miss but a great find. The owner Alberto and his staff are gracious and attentive. My personal favorite, duck breast with a farro in a red wine reduction is a must have. The garden is a hidden gem. An oasis in the East Village.

I don't know if it's the choice in the menu to picked from or was it me! But it turned out I picked the pretty rich foods. I had the fried battered asparagus with an interesting dip that had chopped capers. Next choice was the gnocchi served in a shell made of Parmesan cheese with cheesy sauce. It certainly was delicious but was rich after having just eaten fried asparagus. Dessert was affogato. They made the gelato which was very creamy. It all tastes very good though. Maybe they should less caloric menu?

Very attentive service, visited on a Sunday night. There are not many tables, so make sure you have a reservation. The food arrives quickly, while the menu is not extensive, everything was fresh and prepared with care. Very tasty, homemade pasta creations, which can all be ordered in both half and full portions. A nice small bar to serve the table as well. It is not near any subways, so leave time to either walk into the area, or catch a cab.

This is becoming our 'go to' place for excellent Italian food in NYC. The menu has some standards, some innovative dishes & something for everyone. No scene, no A-list celebs, just friendly staff, terrific patio and reliably delicious meal. If the weather is bad make a reservation because the dining room is small.

Have eaten here about ten times and am always pleasantly surprised how good their food is. The vegetable dishes were as good as I have ever had.

Recommended by a colleague and great reviews on TripAdvisor, I had high hopes for this restaurant and they were met. I had a seat in the garden area which was very charming and it really made it feel like a neighbourhood restaurant. Both my starter (asparagus fries) and pasta dish were excellent. Not too heavy on sauce but the flavours were spot on. I only wish I had time to try the tasting menu which looked like they would great value.

We came here solely based on TripAdvisor reviews and were well rewarded. It's unprepossessing from the outside in a rather shabby neighbourhood and the décor inside is nothing to write home about either. But the food and wine were out of this world and the service was a perfect mix of professionalism and friendliness. The fried asparagus and the duck ravioli starters were superb, and I had the lamb short ribs, which I had never encountered before. They were delicious, as was the accompanying mashed potato. We had a long chat with the interesting and friendly proprietor, who hails originally from Albania. If you like cosy Italian restaurants with superb food, you could not do any better than Barbone.

I took my girlfriend here for Valentines Day dinner and it was excellent. We had the asparagus fries which were really tasty with the sauce. My girlfriend had the duck ravioli which was very good and I had the spaghetti carbonara. I like the fact that it was a small place and was pretty packed for Valentines Day. The menu is not your typical italian restaurant which is nice because you can get your typical italian food from basically anywhere in the city. However, the food might not appease everyone with a picky appetite. We will definitely be back again!

Very small restaurant and cozy atmosphere. Service was nice. The dishes were all just somewhat bland (and we've had these dishes at many authentic Italian restaurants). The wine by the glass, however, is a great deal. The wines by the glass were surprisingly reasonably priced for NYC, was good quality, and was well more than a glass each.

Cozy Italian restaurant, excellent food, reasonable prices, brick wall decor, wine list a little steep but I can recommend Nero D'Avila from Sicily, one of my favorite wines. Apparently has a garden in back. If you don't already know it, Avenue B prices are becoming like uptown. Interesting dishes, well-prepared, very congenial.

Was taken to the Barbone by my son and daughter in law on Thanksgiving weekend. What a wonderful place. We had the 5 item tasting menu and it was so delicous I really didnt want to share. The chicken livers were to die for. If you get the chance please go.
