Some of the best meatballs in Connecticut! The polenta is also top notch!

Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. The restaurant was opened decades ago and the tradition continues... superb Italian near Yale University. The service was a bit uneven but that won't deter us from coming back again. We've already recommended Basta to friends. It's a small space so reservations are a must for dinner.

We had really been looking forward call to our dinner here as it had been two years since our last visit which we had thoroughly enjoyed. My husband’s pappardelle pasta was delicious. They make that particular pasta on premise. My polenta was very mushy, i.e. couldn’t taste any corn or texture so not the type I was expecting and my bruschetta with arugula was mostly arugula with some tasteless bread somewhere below it with tasteless sliced tomatoes. Couldn’t taste any olive oil? So, it was a mixed experience I’m sorry to say.

This was not our first choice for the evening, but it turned out to be our good luck I had the best pasta that I have ever had. The service was exceptional and generally overall one of the best Italian restaurants that we have ever been to Definitely our new favorite

This is a gem in New Haven. Small and intimate with a very warm atmosphere. The waitstaff is terrific. The food and drinks even better. You can hear yourself having a conversation!

I visited BASTA on an amazingly empty New Haven downtown day. The staff couldn't have been more kind. I chose the bistro as per their display of luncheon menus by the door. The price was nice and the food proved yums. I ordered the GRILLED MEDITERRANEAN SEA BASS served with a 'chopped San Marzano tomato sauce, evo, onion, garlic, black olives, capers, lemon & parsley'. The red sauce, superior [see snap]. The fish served was delicately grilled to my specifications plated with arugula. I had not intended to eat the toasted panini bread but it was everso tasty; I did the carbs! Everything was delicioso inclusive of a generous pour of a SuperTuscan. I enjoyed it all. The upcoming weeks bid welcome to Autumn, as many visit the Yale University surrounds. Don't hesitate to dine here when you are in the Chapel Street area or make it a destination spot. Mangia Mangia.

This place is small, but the flavor is big. Sat outside on a beautiful August evening, and everything we had was top notch. Service was attentive and the menu is priced fairly. Best restaurant find during a week long stay in New Haven.

Went here for dinner last week and what a fantastic find! Our servers, Mary & Lorraine were warm and knowledgeable. You can tell this food is made with love - not just churned out. Absolutely delicious! Only regret is that there is no Basta in NYC where we're from....Thanks Nino for a great and memorable meal!

Three of us had dinner here recently. Small place, open kitchen (though behind glass, nice touch). Two people had glasses of wine recommended by server - excellent choices. The bread is made on premises and it shows: fabulous! That detail is important because it shows they pay attention to these things. Two pasta dishes were excellent as reported by my colleagues, as was my arugula salad with grilled chicken (after server brought a bread refill). The service was perfect -- very attentive but not intrusive. No desert, just one cup of coffee. Bill was $96 without tip. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed a great meal here, great food and good service. Although the place is small the menu has lots of choice and everything we ordered tasted great.

The sevice at Basta was very attentive. Wine and drinks were wonderful. Had the panne cotto as an of the best ever! Homemade pappardella was delicious but did not care for the caprese and sunday dinner sauces...too thick and too much oregano! Actually, tasted like it was out of a jar. Will return someday but may just try some of the appetizers..

I stopped in New Haven on my trip from New York City to Springfield, MA, to meet friends for lunch and a brief visit. We dined at Basta Trattiora in downtown New Haven. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. The restaurant is small and attractively decorated with a ceiling painting reminiscent of Michelangelo. We sat toward the back and were able to look into the kitchen through a glass window as food was being prepared. The restaurant has a cozy, relaxing ambience.

Went to Basta while staying overnight in New Haven and visiting Yale. I was glad we happened upon this restaurant as it seems to be one of the best ones in the area. The food was very good and the waitress, a local, extremely friendly.

Great evening here with friends! The restaurant is intimate but noisy...but the food and service more than make up for the noise level. We totally enjoyed everything we ordered.

My friend and I visited New Haven for the first time and this was our first taste of the area. We loved the experience from the moment we walked in the door. We were welcomed with open arms (literally) and treated like family the entire time in this special restaurant. We shared the arugula bruschetta which was to die for and for entrees the salmon verde and meatballs. Both were divine. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an intimate, pleasurable experience. Would definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again!

Basta is a great marriage of both the back and front of the house in a restaurant. Nino one of the owners as well as Dave our server could not be more informative and welcoming. The food was as impressive. Favorites were the meatball appetizer, pane cotto which is some of the best I have ever had, and the Sicilian calamari. Main course entrees which we loved were the Frutti de Mare and the shrimp carbonara. Dessert specialty was the chocolate/coconut bites. Small venue so I would suggest reservations. A must go to when in New Haven. I will return.

Went there for Valentine's Dinner. Staff was excellent, wishing everyone who walked in Happy Valentine's Day. Restaurant was decorated with roses and little hearts on every table. They had a prefixed Valentine's menu, however we ordered off the regular menu and everything was excellent. Have been to Basta several times and have a great meal and experience every time.

New Haveners are so lucky to be blessed with numerous excellent Italian restaurants in the downtown area but this one knocks it out of the park. Of course any restaurant with an association to the legendary Claire's has got to be a winner! Its a very small bistro with a NYC feel even though its intimate and romantic- perfect for a date or for a family dinner- it works for all Food is simply out of this world and fresh tasting. Again, it is not an inexpensive place to dine but the quality cant be beat. Interesting menu choices with many typical items but also many unusual unique choices you wont find elsewhere, very imaginative recipes. Parking is hit or miss, this is very close to the New Haven Green so on street parking or a local pay lot is your choice. A guaranteed delicious memorable meal will be had at Basta - its a winner! Note: thanks to the reviewer who submitted all the helpful pics above, I especially love the bathroom pics! it was a very nice clean bathroom and seeing the pics with the plants jogged my memory!

We were placed at a table next to the door on a very cold night. They would not change our table. We had wine, bread, and salad. Salad was very average with barely any dressing on it. Ordered salmon with side dishes. They substituted the potato for polenta which I did not like. When I complained about it, she did not change the side dish. Dessert of tiramisu tasted like it was taken out of the freezer. Dinner was over-priced and disappointing.
