If you’re looking for a little workout with your relaxation, head to New Zealand’s Hot Water Beach, where you have to dig your own spot to soak. Before and after low tides, the hole you dig will fill with spring-fed water that contains plenty of natural minerals. Located south of the North Island’s Mercury Bay, this is a communal beach area that’s especially popular during the December-to-March summer months.

I've eaten here a few times now as it's one of the closest cafes near our house. On the plus side: it's a funky little cafe with a a great outdoor area - perfect for those sunny days when you want to sit outside, with big umbrellas to keep you sheltered from the sun's scorching rays. They also have free wifi. On the minus side: the food has never quite lived up to expectations (although I have yet to eat any of the cabinet food, which I'm told is good, I've only ordered from the menu). For example, the last time we went there, I ordered the nachos and I got a plate full of corn chips with hardly any nacho topping, so after a few mouthfuls I was left with a plate of dry corn chips. Not ideal. Overall, Hot Waves Cafe is okay, but there is room for improvement.

Well done Mary Channings . Your place is superb. You serve nice food and it is a great place to just sit and relax. We highly recommend this eating hole. We were staying with our brother and sister in laws at the Top Ten camp site nearby for a few days. Bone my brother in law bikes it from Auckland quite a few times in the year and we can see why now. Well worth a visit

Beautiful setting, loved all the art work on display. Coffee was really nice but the full breakfast was quite disappointing, dry mushrooms,a very grey sausage which had hardly seen the frying pan and tough bacon. Could be a great place for breakfast if a bit more love was shown in the quality of ingredients and the cooking of the food. It wasn't cheap either!

Found this popular place between Xmas and new year then went back again end of feb. excellent food including cabinet options if you are in a hurry a lovely place to sit outside with some background music. They have lots of gluten free options which is a bonus for me having coeliac. Will definitely be back next time I'm up that way. Thank you😊

When I walked in with my family, we were not greeted with a warm smile. Whilst waiting for our food, the waitress asked in a stern voice "Where is your table number?" Then I found out we were not given one! I ordered eggs benedict with smoked salmon but it looked more like panfried salmon..picture attached. It is a pity with the bad customer service as the cafe is a really nice & relaxing place..with free wifi and dining areas with sunshine.

We had started our day early, waking before dawn to go to the beach and dig our bath tubs, then greeted the sun rise. So we were hungry for breakfast after showering and changing at the holiday park. Hot Waves did not disappoint. The breakfast was delightful and the setting was beautiful.

Nice food, good coffee and a great choice of siting outside surrounded in the native bush with native birds flitting around, or out the other side overlooking bush and hills, or inside. Interesting art and gifts.

A local recommended this place and it was perfect. It has a beautiful garden to sit in, it is a peaceful location and the staff were really friendly. We ate here 3 mornings while staying in Hahei and wouldn't recommend anywhere else for breakfast. I had the gluten free big breakfast and it was very tasty. The pancakes were also really good.

Really good breakfast and okay coffee. It's nothing special though. No view or fun interior just a small town cafe. It's good if you're in the area already.

We were staying at Hahei for a wedding and had been inside to long due to the persistent rain so we took the chance to check out the café at Hot Water Beach. The café was busy and it would have been nice to sit outside and enjoy the garden. We had the beetroot salad and nachos with a coffee each and a slice to finish off. The coffee was hot and enjoyable. The beetroot salad was fresh with a touch of orange and a yummy dressing. My husband said his nachos were good although there were a few too many nacho chips for the amount of mince/bean mixture. Other customers were also 'hiding' from the rain as they were either reading newspapers or had taken advantage of the swap a book library. If we are down that way again we will definitely call in

Good food, good selection of beers, gift shop ...... but especially live music on weekends. If you are in hot water beach it is worth spend an evening, especially on weekends. A stone's throw from the beach and camping.

We popped in for lunch after going to Hot Water Beach. Staff were nice and the food great. I had the nachos and they were good. Hubby had the beef burger and really liked it - homemade as claimed. Best dish was the pancakes by far. Lovely relaxed atmosphere with lots of seating inside and out.

I had the best burger ever and the pizzas were great two. Nice and quirky menu, local food, with a lovely ambience. We listened to great live music whilst we ate, and the volume was low enough for us to be able to talk. MIts a must eat place!

Enjoyed beef burgers after our 4 hour kayaking trip to Cathedral Cove. Food was good, very small portion of potatoes with burger but nonetheless, very tasty

came here summer holidays. All go, really busy. Staff efficiient and on the ball. Seating inside and outside and other areas out the back selling also souvenirs, arts and crafts, books etc. Food came out reasonable time especially when tables were all filled. One group goes out and another family comes in and sits down. I liked the atmosphere.

I was incredibly relieved to find a cafe in Hot Water Beach - and open for breakfast! Stopped by this lovely restaurant on my way out of HWB, and wished I had more time to visit more. Art work and aesthetics were incredible to view. Plan on visiting again!

We visited the Hot Waves after Hot Water Beach. Great food and very friendly staff. The cafe is gorgeous and very child friendly, with a big garden and cubby for children.

Instead of sitting in a puddle of hot water at the nearby beach, sit here instead. Set in lovely gardens, this is a great place to relax and eat delicious food, freshly cooked and served with a smile.
