We visited for a pre-musical drink and snack. The wine selection was varied and the cabinet options fresh. Id recommend going whether for a coffee or a drink or a sweet treat especially if visiting the Civic theatre.

Had a a couple of drinks before the show. Happy Hour from 4 pm to 6 pm so most of the drinks are a flat $ 7 dollars, half the price of those inside the Civic. A good choice and staff were great.

Stopped for a light lunch here as didn't fancy burgers and chips which seems to be the norm in Queen Street. It was the most delicious chicken wrap and perfect cup of tea, just what the doctor ordered. Would definitely stop here again :)

Enjoyed a much needed coffee here after walking miles around the city. Don't recommend sitting at outside tables though as the fumes from the traffic are unpleasant.

Went here for a drink before watching a show at the civic. Place had a good atmosphere though food and drink options were reasonably limited. Not bad but not great.

ok for a quick bite and a drink although the staff could be much more polite. no reason to retun, but no reason to avoid it if in the neighbourhood

whilst we sat outside & rested out weary bodies after doing Auckland & Waiheke Island. It was interesting to sit right in the thick of it all & watch the theatre goers, which is right next door, whilst shifting tables frequently to dodge the smokers. Go during happy hour which is 4-6pm for a cheaper drink ;-)

When here in a group of 6 for a drink on a Saturday afternoon after a business meeting. Ordered three beers, a glass of wine, an orange juice and I had the salmon quiche from the counter. Everything was average, the price ($56), the food, the environment etc. There was actually a distinct lack of seating in the Civic Foyer area where they have sets for this cafe, even though no one else was there but we managed to get the girl behind the counter to go into the theatre and get us an extra chair. I could see it might be ok for a quick drink before a show in the theatre, but it's not really a place to go otherwise.

Great spot to grab a drink after (or before) a show at the Civic, and good at the windwo to watch the passing parade - but this is the not a destination bar. The counter food looked average. Too many good restaurants and cafes around - but convenience is great.

If you like to sit down and watch people passing by, that't the right spot. It is on a busy street and you can sit outside, enjoy a coffee or a drink and look at people passing by...

Stark's is located next door to the heritage Civic theatre in the hub of the theatre district. There is an adjoining doorway into the Civic foyer. There is limited indoor seating at the cafe but more outdoor seating on Queen Street. Generally the cafe operates in the afternoon and evening. There is a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The coffee is excellent. The decor is very modern; the cafe is clean and hygienic; the staff are friendly and efficient. There is a range of snacks, all reasonably priced by Auckland standards. It is a wonderful spot to watch the world go by. The cafe is named after a famous performer named Freda Stark who used to perform at the Civic as well as other venues. An added bonus is the fact that overseas performers come into the cafe when an international troupe is performing at the Civic!

Called in here on a wet afternoon after a show for teas & coffee and were pleasantly surprised. The tea arrived in old English china cups with silk teabags, the coffee was well made and the date scones very fresh and light. Lovely staff also. Had the Goldilocks factor - just right!

Near the Civic where show's such as Mamma Mia Perform, the staff are great and welcoming with no doubt, a good friend of mine introduced me here. I'd say it would be an Expresso Cafe and Champagne Bar. An interesting history this unique place has actually. Starks is named after Freda Stark who danced in just a shimmering veneer of gold paint at the Civic in the 1940s, (apparently the American troops used to book the entire venue when she was performing), it's a thoroughly versatile spot that demands a second look. Inside is an art deco homage to Freda, and the whole interior is decked out in lustrous gold paint. With Auckland's most stunning theatre sitting above, Stark's role as a champagne bar that makes perfect sense. Bubbles punctuate the cocktail list, and there's a list of eight champagnes of various vintages that are probably pretty popular when The Civic hosts a red-carpet event. On the beer front Monteiths flies the local flag, while Budvar and Kronenbourg add a Euro touch that fits well with the cosy heritage space inside. With moody lights and a stunning bar, inside it's not too difficult too imagine you're in somewhere like Prague and Paris. Your right in the centre of Quenn street and can be loud etc but a place to hang if you dont mind the nightlife all around. Open 11:30 - 11:00pm, 7days.
