We arrived a bit late, without a reservation for lunch, but the staff was so accommodating sitting us at a table within minutes. We had a incredibly delicious lunch in this tiny place, and highly recommend it for the authentic food, and the service. This is a tiny place, so I'd recommend that you make a reservation for lunch or dinner. It was 1/2 tourists, and 1/2 locals, which doesn't bother us, everyone has to eat, and if you come here you will not be disappointed. CASH ONLY sign on the door, be aware. Grazie Trattoria Sostanza.

Two words: Butter. Chicken. Order it! We also enjoyed tortellini bolognese and the wine. Family style dining and two seatings per day. Make your reservations early and don't miss this experience.

I really enjoyed the evening here at Trattoria Sostanza. It doesn't get a five star from me because it was all tourists eating out, with no Italians present. It kinda felt like one of those organised trips to try the local culture where the seating is cleverly arranged to ensure you sit with others and mingle. The food was great, although I tried the recommended egg and artichoke pie which was just like the breakfast eggs I'd been eating at the hotel! Pudding exceeded my expectations and I would happily return just to eat the meringue with wild strawberries. I found the prices to be in line with the other restaurants we visited and spent €90 for two.

Hole-in-the-wall trattoria with delicious food. Lots of locals the night we were there - excellent Bistecca Florentine but everything we had was delicious! Thankfully, our waiter kindly brought out the raw, large size Bistecca we had just ordered (for 2) to show us how big it was -- we promptly downsized as it would have been at least twice as much steak as we could eat! Most tables are communal; cash only. Reserve in advance.

The Florence beef is delicious. Must to try if you come to Florence. Restaurant very simple but food is very good.

We give this restaurant five stars, based on their friendly, congenial staff, but most of all because of their tender, moist, wonderful steaks. Our dining guests said it was the best steak they had ever had. The pasta was good, too, and the wait staff made adjustments to our liking and dietary needs. Call ahead at least two months. Small, low-key venue. Be prepared to dine with several other guests at long tables. Cash only. White table cloths, though. We would definitely return!

Very limited menu but all the bestsellers are covered. Florentine steak - tortellini etc. the chicken with butter sauce was delicious but the best thing on the menu was the artichoke pie appetizer! Get more then 1 if you are 4+ people. Reservations needed!

We came to this restaurant on a recommendation and made sure to make a reservation as there are only 2 seatings - one at 7pm and one at 9pm. We were the first in line so we were seated at a table all the way in the back next to the kitchen door wide open. It was definitely the best seat in the house as we were able to see everything and the chef made sure to "put on a show" for us! The butter chicken was the best chicken I've ever had in my life - it melts in your mouth and is outstanding. The Florentian steak was also a massive portion and delicious. Highly recommend this place!!

My mother first went to Sostanza in 1957 when she was a student. Our family, all excellent cooks becuz of mom, has since then enjoyed the unsurpassed quality and experience these past 60 years. If you want the authentic Bistecca fiorentine the go and forget the rest. Unpretentious incredibly inviting, outstanding quality. And you must must must have the Tartina. Heaven on earth.

Brilliant place, great service and atmosphere. Ordered 1/4 wine for 4 euros? Amazing start and from there it just got better and better. The butter chicken was so filling and so good- Heaven is a good word to describe it. My husband had the beef in green sauce which was also tender and pure melt in your mouth yumminess. The staff couldn't be any more welcoming . We arrived just before 2 which we found out is just before closing, but they still seated us and didn't rush us in anyway. Perfect experience.

Sostanza has been well reviewed by thousands of satisfied guests, and after dinner there on our last evening, we can count ourselves part of this happy & well-fed select group- their classics of charcoal grilled bisteca, pollo al burro (butter chicken) & torta di carciofi (artichoke flan) are excellent & an example of how the use of fresh & well seasoned ingredients, simply prepared, can yield such superb & memorable results. Booking a few days in advance is essential for both lunch and dinner- we saw numerous people being turned away through the evening who obviously had not booked. Staff are charming & efficient, and staff in the open kitchen is happy to let you stick your head around to watch them chargrilling the steaks & preparing the orders.

Sostanza is always a GO TO in Florence. Not easy to get a reservation but worth it. The Artichoke Pie, Florentine Steak and Butter Chicken are all must haves. The Service is great, the wines good, and the prices reasonable. Just go!

A friend recommended this place a must-try so we were excited when we were able to secure a reservation for dinner. We were EXTREMELY disappointed. I don't understand how over 1000 people can say the butter chicken was amazing or even the best they've ever had. It is really just two pieces of chicken fried in butter and seasoned a little bit of salt. No herbs. No other seasoning. No side dishes. On top of that it was kind of dry (yes, I know it's chicken breast, but I've definitely had better chicken breast elsewhere). We also had the pasta pomodoro, which was very underwhelming as well. I'm a terrible cook, and I have probably, on occasion, made better pasta than this. As other reviewers have pointed out, the portions were small, and the main dishes don't come with sides. We were originally going to order dessert based on all the positive reviews, but we decided to get the hell out of there as soon as we finished our food. By the way, the couple next to us ordered a 7-euro appetizer that was literally two pieces of honeydew melon. When we saw that on the menu we thought it was some sort of special appetizer prepared with melons. But no, it was honestly two thin slices from a honeydew melon. Another dish they ordered was the tortellini in chicken soup, and the woman immediately reached for the menu to order something else after having one bite of it. Just saying. It wasn't just us. Don't waste your time or money with this place when you're in Florence. There are so many other better, cheaper choices.

Tough choices! The butter chicken was awesome. I have to figure that one out! This was a recommendation, thank you James and Jessica! It exceeded all expectations! Service was family style. Loving. Intimate. We were served like royalty. Foodies will not be disappointed.

This was from far my favorite restaurant in Florence! Small ad cozy. Don't look at the menu but ask the waiter for recomemndations or go to the kitchen and check out what is cooking! Fun place, unpretentious and moderate prices. A real find!

My wife & I visited because a friend of ours named Tom who owns an amazing restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida, said he went there & loved it. Tom is an amazing chef... And when a great chef says "Go," we felt like we outta go. We were SO glad we did! Be sure to get reservations because this place books up just about every meal. And, of course, you've GOT to get the Artichoke Pie & Butter Chicken... WOW! The staff was fantastic & we made a new friend, too, as they sat a solo traveler at our table with us. I would put this place at the very top of my definitely-go-back list!

This small restaurant is definitely a hidden gem in Florence! Delicious food (especially the chicken!), great atmosphere, and you can actually walk into the kitchen and see your food being made! Make sure you save room for dessert - the merengue pie is outstanding! Make a reservation ahead of time - they are usually booked!

This little restaurant is just special! Sharing communal tables and eating food from time tested recipes and being served by staff that has been there for eons - its just special! And yes - the Butter Chicken is worth the hype. The entire experience is just special and sort of one of a kind!
