It's a tiny pub and it was packed when we called as the Monday night quiz was in progress. We stopped for one wonderful pint from their extensive range of cask beer and resolved either to arrive in time to participate in future, or to come when we can find a seat. You should do the same - this place is excellent.

Found it via a sign pointing down and alley off of The Royal Mile... came in to a warm tiny place. A open fire straight ahead and a handsome man in kilt as well 😉 Asked for a suggestion from the bartender and got three generous samples to taste. Excellent service and beer.

You would struggle to create a more perfect pub for a typically damp Scottish evening. Cosy, welcoming and a suitably mixed crowd, spanning all ages and nationalities.

Nice little pub. Warm and friendly with a lovely selection of gins and ales. You can easily miss this great little pub as it down a alley on the Royal Mile ( top end ). Bar staff friendly and helpful. It’s a must for a Edinburgh gin and a chat. No TV or load music so the thumbs up for me.

At first, everything was perfect- cozy place with kind staff, and good selection of beers, but...I paid my 4,50 pounds beer with 10 pounds, and they gave me back OLD 5 pounds note. That old 5 pound note, i can not use anywhere! Really, it is not problem, because of money ; problem is because that was really awful. Waitress saw that i´m not from Scotland and she decide to scam me. Impossible that she did not know, that 5 pounds note is "out of order". So, because of such small amount of money, they got 1/5 here, and i will told everybody to avoid this place like a plague.

Been going back to Edinburgh for 40+years now and have only missed a visit here once, they were re-fitting and therefore closed. Great atmosphere for a pre Murrayfield drink and a superb place post match. Good selection of beers and a very good selection of whisky. For us this is more a place of pilgrimage than anything else. This was the first place I drank “legally” in Edinburgh and I hope I will enjoy many more visits.

Located on the Royal Mile, the Jolly Judge is awesome. The beer and whiskey selection is just great, and combined with the ambiance and terrific pub food, the total experience is great. We had a simple soup and sandwich combo which was wonderful.

The jolly judge has become a regular spot during my numerous trips to Edinburgh and it never disappoints. The Jolly judge management must be commended for the staff they hire. As every staff member I've ever had the pleasure of meeting has been nothing but friendly, helpful and welcoming. I want to give Jack, Dan and Gabbie a special nention for this particular trip as they were amazing and make you feel like a local. I recommend everyone and anyone that goes to Edinburghto call into this gem for a pint (especially the McEwan's 80). Just don't be surprised if you find it hard to leave after just the 1. Already looking forward to my next trip to Edinburgh and the Jolly Judge

Very cosy little pub, tucked away in a place you would least expect it, but is definitely welcomed! Log fire, friendly staff, not many seats which adds to the cosy feeling of this place.

Dropped in for a pint after seeing it on TA; nice range of beers and cosy little room to chill for a while.

My boyfriend & I loved this pub. Its definitely one of the best in Edinburgh, especially off the Royal Mile! It's traditional, cosy, friendly and quaint! Has a lot of history from the land it stands on, to the decor. The staff are so, so lovely and the food is simple yet delicious (they stop serving food after 3pm, I think). Great range of beers, cider, whiskeys etc and the staff are knowledgeable about them all and happily offer their suggestions. We stayed for quite awhile and at times it was very busy. Go here, you won't regret it.

Our taxi driver recommended this old pub on the Royal Mile. Small interior, but had picnic tables outside for the smokers in our group. Great atmosphere with friendly locals. Had a lovely time.

This is a real cool pub, and cheaper than we imagined. Lads at the bar are friendly and the day we were in they were having quiz night, I didn't engage but everyone was having fun! The outside are is also very nice but you can only drink outside till 10pm. I'd love to go back to this place

We loved this place so much we went each day we were in Edinburgh! This is a proper cozy pub - carpeting, fire, no TV, no music...just conversation and atmosphere. Such a find! Definitely check it out.

Very welcoming people as well as the ambiance. It gives the feeling that it has been there for hundreds of years and you breath the past of the city. The food is tasty although nothing special. However, the experience is special and worth the visit. Moreover, they were very good about advising on the different types of whiskey.

Stopped for lunch after a tour of the castle! Toastie maker out of order so soup(amazing) and sandwiches it was! Wine not great but great space to rest from the tourist trail!

Wonderful hidden gem! Jaunt down the short Close (alleyway) and you’ll find this secret little pub with a basic but good menu, good service, and comfortable atmosphere. After dealing with the hordes of tourists it was refreshing to jump off of the mile and enjoy a lovely hot bowl of Lentil and Sweet Potato soup with a sandwich on some really good bread. The only reason I’m marking a 4 is because their toaster machine was broken. Great stop though!
