La Grand Ourse has always been one of our favourite restaurants in Val d'Isere. It worked well for both lunch and dinner. The terrace is a real sun trap and in the evenings the restaurant was intimate and cosy. However, we were disappointed with our trips this year. It still worked well enough for lunch although we did feel the food was not as good as it could be. However, the evening meal was really quite poor. The lighting was incredibly high and the dining room felt really quite dated. We hoped the food would make up for it but sadly not. Would we return? Given we have enjoyed so many meals over the years here we probably would - but it will seriously need to improve.

Lovely place although the service was a little slow. You need to walk through the edge of the snow fields to get here so wear appropriate footwear! Old place and we were certain the top floor is on a very obvious slant however it was still lovely and cosy. Definitely give it a go if you're looking for something a bit special.

We have visited this restaurant many times over recent holidays and were keen to ensure we find not miss out this time. Eating in the covered terrace on one of the duller days we enjoyed superb food in very generous portions, very friendly service. We found the menu to be broad enough and the daily specials were superb.

With great sadness I give this a bad review this time. La Grande Ourse has been one of our favourites over the last 4 years and this year's visit was poor. My partner's meal was actually up there with the high quality we had become used to. Mine was appalling - my makerel starter was unpleasant and my 'seared tuna' main course was so badly overdone it was literally like rubber. The courteous staff did, of course, apologise and they didn't charge me for the main course. Will we go back? Probably. I'd like to think this was just a bad day.

Set in what is now a busy area off the high street and close to the nursery slopes of Val d'Isere, Le Grande Ourse is one of the oldest if not the oldest restaurant in the town. It serves variety of dishes that are refined version of Savoyard specialities combined with some French classics. The atmosphere is elegant, traditional, understated and very relaxed. Food is good, alas not outstanding. Our steak tartare was under-spiced made of aged beef and missed few key ingredients. Veal escalope would have been better was it made of proper veal, what we had was too old to be mistaken for, readily available in France, young fresh veal. Grand Ourse salad was OK-ish, with very delicate and flavour full dressing, but otherwise not more than chunks of ham, cheese, nuts and endives. Tasting menu offered quite delicious lamb with not very exciting additions, seared tuna with non-descript noodles, average foie gras and very ambitious desert that failed to deliver. The wine list is very good, and service was impeccable, something that, together with the atmosphere and proximity to our chalet, made otherwise average gastronomic experience quite memorable. Overall, the prices are surprisingly reasonable for this location and type of food, though there are items on the menu that can help you part with lots of money if you feel so inclined.

We have been to the La Grande Ourse over more then 20 years but have not been for 6 years. I have to say I was disappointed with the choice of menu and the quality of service. My wife and I shared a chateaubriand which was perfect and saved the restaurant from only getting 2 stars. It is the one restaurant we visited this holiday that I will not go back to.

One of the best in VI. Try the specials. I had a fantastic carpaccio as a main. Lovely wine list. Genuine atmosphere.

Great location for lunch whilst skiing, right at the bottom of the lifts with both outside and inside dining areas

Used to be my favourite place in Val D'Isere. Located at the bottom of the piste in Val D'Isere, one of the best locations for lunch sitting on the terrace with a panoramic view of the resort. The decor for dinner is more formal. The service is good though hectic at lunchtime. Used to be the best food in the resort with an excellent whine list. Nowadays would qualify it as "pleasant" food but not a gastronomical experience. Usual ski resort fare, overpriced for what it is.

OK Weird day. Our 18th wedding anniversary but also our 25th anniversary of meeting. We were waiting in the restaurant when we had heard the news that our children had missed an avalanche by a few feet. They were very considerate as we worried while the kid were being brought to us. Clearly a responsible place and excellent food.

Went here twice during a fortnight stay and it was always our favourite spot in Val D'Isere as felt quite special. It's hard to put a finger on what's changed, but I think they've changed the menu and introduced more casual fare and it seems there are less choices if you want something special but not the full on degustation menu. It all just feels a bit more plastic menu and burger/plat du jour. you can still have the seafood platter and chateaubriand but the whole thing just didn't feel as special. We went with a group of friends and unless you wanted steak, seafood platter or a 100 euro fish to share, you were into the lower end burger fare so people were struggling to choose a meal. A bit unbalanced. But still lovely friendly staff and of course the gorgeous building. Sadly, I think it's off our list. We found the newly renovated Baraque and went there three times so think this will be our new favourite.

We had a chalet all week and are one night out was here. We had a great meal of tartiflette which was exactally what was wan't after a day on the slopes. The menu had a good variety of food for aour table with fussy eatters. The service was excellant and we will be going back next year.

This is the only restaurant that we visited twice for lunch during our week's holiday in Val. The waiters were super charming and the food was perfect for all ages - the onion soup was the reason for the return visit!

Great filet de boeuf, attentive service, good ambience. Probably the best evening meal of our week in Val.

La Grande Ourse is a great restaurant conveniently located with great service and food. The staff there are always very nice and serve you very fast. The food is really good and their plat du jour are always delicious and good value. The atmosphere is great and it has the perfect terrace to sit out on on a sunny day. Been many times and will go many more.

Good food. Amazing friendly service. Definitely recommend. I had the fondue and some lovely wine. My mate had the fish and chips which was also excellent. We ate in the terrace which has amazing views of the alps.

We ate at La Grande Ourse in Dec with family and had such a great time, wonderful atmosphere, accompanied by wonderful food and wine. This Easter we were back out skiing again in Val and decided to return to this restaurant with friends in the evening. We were sat downstairs this time and the place was busy, creating a good ambiance. The food was just as good and I am glad we returned, we go back if we ever return again to Val d'Isere.

Massive portions but super quality, recommend sharing plates. Lovely slope side position but dine inside if overcast.
