This small restaurant is everything that any Michelin star restaurant hopes to be. It is everything that the hospitality industry stands for. It's comfort. It's being cared for and taken care of. The food is fantastic and priced very reasonably. The owner and all employees are eager to help and make you feel at home. This is the type of dining experience you only find once in a blue moon. Please, just go. You won't be sorry.

Gata mala is a small restaurant in Barcelona (a little bit out of the way from where we were staying - but 100% worth it!).. We were a group of 5 and we didn`t have a reservation and even though the restaurant was full Pilar told us to come back in 30min and that she would have a spot for us - she really did! Another problem was that the menu was only in Spanish but she was kind enough to explain everything and even if she didn`t.. you could see the dishes come out for other people (the way I ordered my meal was that I just pointed out - I want that!). On top of the fact that everyone from the staff was really nice (we created our on language somewhere in between Spanish and English), amazing food, it was inexpensive. Can`t wait to go back there when in Barcelona!

We arrived tired and hungry to our accomodation which was a bit outside the centre of the city, so after depositing our bags we headed eager to eat at whatever the nearst we found. And what a find! Its a small place, space for about 20 people, booking would be recommended. That said, Pilar the owner offered us 40m before a group arrived. And we stayed almost 2 hours. She was great with management of space (many years of experience). We ate well, too well. Difficult to get home after with all that we put in our stomaches! The cost was ridicolously cheap. The only drawback is that they don't accept debit/credit cards so come prepared. If find yourself in the centre of Barcellona looking for a place to eat, believe me, it is more that worth it to head out to this place to eat.

Very tasty tapas! Small and cosy place with very friendly team working and serving. I wish we could return one day ( maybe even tomorrow 😃).

If you had best restaurants, Michelline stars and you look for something new - this is a place. After serving great domastic tasting food, you can find the people. It is not just a service: polite, smiling and answering your requests, but real nice good energising people! That dares to love you. That, combined with drink and food gives you greatly spent evening time with good stomack fit and nice teast in your mouth...

Great tapas and staff. We had a wonderful evening here, enjoying, friends food and wine. The owner was a wonderful Lady, she was very passionate about her restaurant and food. Taking great delight in explaining her menu and ingredients. I loved every choice and should I be lucky enough to return to Barcelona I would definitely return. I have friends going to Barcelona soon and will recommend they search this restaurant out and go to taste the delights and enjoy the ambiance. Thank you Julie, Robin, Sue, Esteban Quimet and Antonio

Our awful Spanish combined with their lack of English didn't compromise the most unforgettable experience of Barcelona at Gata mala. The staff were incredibly welcoming, helpful and passionate about their business. They recommended orders to us and so we went along with it. Order a Caña and it arrives at small piece of bread topped with a different kind of deliciousness. The patatas bravas was so good it has now set such a high standard that I can never eat it anywhere else. A MUST visit if you are in Barcelona and want to locals experience.

Wonderful dinner and great service! Intimate restaurant, but staff was so nice and willing to help us. We sat at the bar and talked and ate the ham and tomato quiche and flank steak with potato cake to name a few.

Small, friendly, a bit crowded and possibly the best tapas we had during our stay in Barcelona. I can't recommend the entraña enough, which was probably some of the best beef I have ever had anywhere, and how the restaurant manages to get so much flavour out of simple aubergines is incredible. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive, and make you feel completely at home and one of the family, and the decor is this anarchic combination of things thrown together that somehow completely works and feels completely honest and reassuring. Gata Mala encapsulates the best of the Barcelona tapas culture.

One of the best places in Barcelona to experience the tapas culture! Amazing food for the price... Free tapa on each beer!

Although we arrived early (8pm being early for Barcelona), this modest sized tapas bar was already heaving. The very welcoming owner (?) nevertheless found a corner of the bar for us. All beers came with generous toasted bread tapas, which we supplemented with an additional and tasty dish of goat cheese and aubergine. Friendly, good value, but not for the claustrophobic - advance booking advised.

For 1,50€ you can have a small beer and tapas, everytime different. So good!! I had also the patatas bravas gatamala, not the classic one but very very good! Place is very small so if you don't have a booking might be a bit difficult to find a seat.

What an amazing place! My boyfriend and I were visiting Park Guell and read a TripAdvisor review saying to go to Gata Mala afterwards because of the proximity. We were blown away with the food, the atmosphere and the service. We ordered 2 of the tasting plates of the day and were stuffed. We went in with no reservation and minimal Spanish speaking abilities. The service was amazing and made us feel at home immediately with handshakes and thumbs up all around. The price was very reasonable for the better than home quality meal. Next time we're in Barcelona this will be our first stop! Ps. Park Guell monuments are free after 6:15. Check that out and then head to Gata Mala. Reservations seemed required, but if you get there at opening like we did, you might be able to steal a spot.

Literally, named the bad cat, this is a small, locally run tapas bar where the owner makes you feel like a member of the family. It is well known that in Spain the locals like to eat late, but I think in this bar that is only a plus: come early (around 7pm) and get the full attention of the incredibly helpful staff. In so many other places in Spain, it seems like the concept of tapas has changed due to financial pressures and societal changes: many bars don’t offer free tapas with food, and when they do, they are often a couple of olives and a side of chips. At the “Gata Mala,” though, this tradition lives strong. With each order of a small beer (or other drink), a freshly prepared piece of magic arrives on your plate. This experience at first is as jarring as it is delightful. First Caña down, I received Jamón drizzled in extra virgin olive oil on the ubiquitous fresh bread. Prompt happiness. After drink number two, I get an exquisitely simple dish of a fried quails egg, with sea salt, and herbs. Happiness overload. This dish is, to me, a classic example of how some of the best dishes in Spain are the simplest. Saying “no” to beer is always difficult; this is especially true when that beer comes with a tasty snack. Tapa 3: bacon, herbs, and olive oil. You want it. And finally, to top off the experience, an overwhelmingly flavorful piece of Morcilla. If you have never tried Morcilla, put it on the top of your tasting list. Don’t ask what it is (its no worse than ballpark hotdogs), just sit back and enjoy. As strange as it is, all those flavors were merely the start to the meal. After indulging in these tapas, I spoke with the head chef who recommend that I try a dish made with local eggplant and goats cheese, and veal. The veal was perfectly cooked, situated right between rare and medium-rare, and incredibly juicy. Somehow, though, the eggplant with Goat Cheese was the most memorable dish of the night. A burst of flavors, these dish seemed liked Catalonia on a plate. When you’re in Barcelona, head to don’t miss heading to Gràcia for a local experience. The only problem with the “Gata Mala” is you won’t want to leave. -Ben

When you eat here you are more than a patron, you are family. I have never experienced such warmth at any establishment, anytime, anywhere. The owner, Pilar, is a joy, a treasure. Add that to the wonderful tapas and you have a winner. Thanks Pilar.

This place is absolutely wonderful. The food is great and the staff is the most friendly and helpful you can imagine. We came day after day and always had a great time. The steak was so good that our little one actually threw away her ice cream when we asked if she wanted to go over and have a steak :) The place gets full around 8 so either make a reservation of come early. We did come with both our kids there but it's a bar setting so your kids need to be comfortable with it.
