Our son was recommended this restaurant. Great service, scrumptious food, well worth the trip. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great meal.

I do not eat Indian food often and I do not eat a lot of seafood but Babu Ji has won me over. The fish curry is a superb dish because it has the right balance. The coconut and the mustard are not empowering while other restaurants will have more curry than meat, the fish curry at Babu Ji has the right balance of fish and curry. I went there on a Saturday during lunchtime and I spoke to one of the staff members and he was very friendly. He was keen to know about how I knew of the place and if I was someone who ate Indian food often. Although I live on the opposite side of Melbourne, I will be keen to try more dishes at Babu Ji in the future.

Went with.a Group of friends early on a Sunday evening. BYO wine at $10 a bottle. Lots of beer choices. Chose an eat as much as you can thali - the whole table had to order the same accompanied with an extra dish of mixed naan breads for $12. Thali consisted of rice, vegetarian dish, goat curry & butter chicken. All very tasty though I think next time I'd like to order from the menu. Service efficient and no hesitation when we asked for extra food. Good value, great food, friendly service. Will return.

Dinner at Babu Ji lived up to my hopes. The food was a great mix of traditional offerings (such as samosas and tandoori chicken ) and more inventive dishes such as Drunken Pani Puri ( the love child of traditional pani puri and savoury spiced vodka shots!!) - An excellent way to start the evening and possibly responsible for the glowing review!

try and visit this restaurant on each trip to Melbourne. the menu is interesting and not your normal Indian! beware when ordering entree's, they are very large servings and plenty enough to share for two or more. Get in early and space and seating is limited

If you have a hankering for a little butter chicken and a bit of cash to spare, hit this place up, you won't regret it. With both dine in and take away menus you have the option to sit within the fairly small, yet vibrant establishment, or dine in at home. Main meals are full of meat, not a few pieces of protein floating in a Sauce ocean, which was a pleasant surprise...but considering the price of each dish, I would expect it to be so. The meals all tasted fantastic. Butter chicken- the ol favourite- was delish. Samosas are a hit too.

Very smallish place bust serves up quality "modern" Indian meals. Best plated Indian meals we have come across in Melbourne. Offers the classics, but given the Babu Ji upmarket look and touch. Delightful offerings, all beautifully crafted and presented. Heading towards Indian "Fine-Dining" in its innovative approaches to some staple Indian fare. We loved it. Been back 3 times, and will return for more.

After having been here on two other occasions ,the last in October last year, I was disappointed that standards had slipped. While there was nothing wrong with the food I felt that it lacked the complexity of flavours that we had experienced previously with dishes that had elevated it beyond the average suburban Indian restaurant and thus justifying the trip to St Kilda . Tandoori Chicken entree was tasty and generous. However our fish curry was bland with barely any other ingredients other than fish ,yellow mustard seeds and coconut milk. I reluctantly have to say I'll be off to Dandenong and Clayton for my next Indian meal.

Everything was spectacular from start to finish. Pani puri with vodka was a fun twist. Loved the paneer sticks. Sesame naan and curries were great!

We have discovered this innovative Indian restaurant in St Kilda. Indian street dishes prepared with a modern twist. Casual and comfortable atmosphere with friendly staff. A great selection of craft beers. We have eaten here twice recently and will return. VandJ

The staff were great guiding us through the menu. I loved the fact that's it's not your traditional 'tandoori arch' kind of place. Food ok too. I found the prices way too high though. Maybe it was because it was a public holiday (I'll ignore the fact that there were no signs indicating a PH surcharge, even though they charged one!) $110 for two for me is a bit steep. But worth a visit

This is not a fancy place but it offers some of the best Indian food tasted in recent past.. Full of fresh spices. Dishes enjoyed included the not to be missed drunken Pani Puri, the Chat Pate Aloo (a take on this dish as it includes fresh fruits), the Chana Chaag Masala and the Dal. Service was perfect and friendly. Would be back every day!

It was a friday night we were a party of 4. Told on the phone when booking that it was $49 per head for Fridays and Saturdays. I specifically asked them to explain what this meant and they said we can choose any 2 mains or entres from the menu. The assumption most people would be there would be flexibility per table in choosing and that even if there was no flexibility by table that the portions would be servings enough for 4 persons. When the lamb main arrived it was in a small shallow 12 cm diameter dish with 4 small cubes of lamb floating in the sauce. The same with the fish main we chose. Only the tandoori entre was an acceptable size for an entre. I dont think we would go there again and unlikely to recommend it to our friends. It felt like a dishonest (slight of hand) deal and certainly was not worth $49 per head.

Visited this place for the first time for a function and first thing I noticed was how attentive the service was. Very impressed. Our food was probably different from the standard menu as it was a cocktail function and the tandoori chicken and amritsari fish were divine! Definitely coming back to try the highly recommended fish curry.

Pretty food designed to appeal to non-Indian customers. The appetisers are the better dishes; interesting fusion food that looks really appealing on the plate. However, the flavours of Babu Ji food, especially of the currys, are fairly boring, and don’t stand out over your average $12 Indian curry. Compared to other Indian, you’re getting extra coloured shredded veggies and leaves on top, so the curry looks much prettier. Worth an extra $10? Not for me. Many better-tasting options around for less.

I went there after reading the good reviews on TripAdvisor. I was not disappointed, the atmosphere is nice, simple, with just a few paintings on the walls. They have a projector showing some Indian music videos on the white wall, the music is not intrusive. The service was really really fast, I ordered and a second later they already served me. I ordered a simple butter chicken but it was good, balanced and tasty. I also had a garlic naan (lot of garlic). I was alone and at the end of the meal I was fairly full and satisfied. I wouldn't say it's a cheap place, but it is not expensive for what you get. I would come back to try some other dishes.

Have been 3 times now & Babu Ji is perfect. The flavours are amazing best curry in St Kilda. Opt for the banquet options too much food. We had 4 entree & 2 mains & could not walk afterwards. The beer fridge is amazing self service the best!

After realizing this place was only 100m away I had to try it, craving a decent curry. The nice gent let me order early - 6pm opening hours now, not 5pm!per their website. Anyway I enjoyed a rich goat curry, buttery basmati rice and a sesame naan. All good. Lovely flavours. I washed it down with a cooper's ale and felt perfectly satisfied! Now I'm keen to visit with friends, hopefully next week.
