At this happening spot, folks grab a beer and take to the pool tables for some friendly competition or to try their hand at darts. If all that's a little too staid, you'll even find foosball tables and video games to test your mettle. To keep the energy up, live bands play often, both local and national acts, and patrons maintain a party attitude through anything that happens.

Everybody knows the Varsity, Baton Rouge's nightlife mainstay near LSU's north gates. The place is best known for live music, and its roster has included Better Than Ezra, The Wailers Band, Kevin Martin, and other rock, reggae, and alternative performers. When they're not around, you'll find sports on huge TVs, LSU gameday events, and awesome dance parties.

Weathered brick walls hung with gilt-framed mirrors set the scene for this hip establishment, which is a fabulous place to catch live blues and jazz with some funk and zydeco thrown in for good measure. If you need sustenance, the menu boasts a local flair, and beer and spirits are available. Regular events at the Roux House include live music and great happy hours. At times, dancing has even been known to happen.

Chelsea's offers a good time without a lot of pretense. It also offers all sorts of distractions, from live music by great local talents to sports on the TV and, sometimes, open mic nights. Two full bars offer dozens of imports and domestic beers, and nightly specials make imbibing even more affordable. Music (generally Wednesday to Saturday) ranges from rock and blues to funk, and crowds always make the performances a terrific experience.
