Brandywine Creek State Park. This 933-acre park is divided by grey stone walls built of local stone in the late 1800's. At that time the property was a dairy farm owned by the du Pont family. The park maintains 14 miles of trails for fitness, wildlife observation, and photography. Enjoy picnics, kites, fishing, canoeing; sledding and cross-country skiing. Halloween Haunted Trail is a popular event.
Nemours Mansion and Gardens. Set among spectacular French formal gardens, this is the 300-acre estate of Alfred I. duPont. One of the finest examples of French-style gardens in America exquisitely landscaped with fountains, pools, and statuary surrounded by natural woodlands. They cover 222 acres and closely follow the model of Petit Trianon at Versailles.
Mt. Cuba Center is recognized as having the region’s finest woodland wildflower gardens. It is the former home and family estate of Mr. and Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland. Scenic ponds, Formal Garden, tours.
Alapocas Run State Park includes the Can-Do Playground, trails through fields and forest, rock-climbing area. Along the way, you will pass the extraordinary Blue Ball Barn, the once-abandoned dairy barn built by Alfred I. du Pont has been transformed into a showcase and the permanent home of Delaware Folk Art collection.
Bellevue State Park, including Bellevue Hall mansion and historic estate, once owned by William du Pont, Jr. The park features fitness track circling catch-and-release stocked fishing pond, exercise trail, hiking trails, cycling, both paved and unpaved paths, tennis (8 outdoor clay courts; tennis pro available). Modern equestrian facility with indoor and outdoor arenas for riding lessons. Summer outdoor concerts at the Bandshell. Fall hayrides, outdoor ice skating in season.
