During happy hour at Zablozki’s, it’s not uncommon to spot underage drinkers–namely the sort who drink out of sippy cups.

Sustenance need not require braving the light of day, as the kitchen’s handling variously topped mini dogs called Coneys, deep fried bacon w/ blue cheese, a Bowl of Meatballs, and gravy-cheese smothered tots.

Taking over the former K&M spot in an old pierogi factory (they’ll have some on the menu using the family’s original recipe), this some-frills sports bar comes from the dudes behind The Bedford.

In any other location, the industrial-sized, pine-planked Redd’s would be hopping on a Friday night, its plush couches and lantern-lit patio filled with groups of drinkers.

On the weekends, R Bar is bumpin’ with folks socializing, shooting pool, and sipping homemade sangria or infused vodkas. Other nights of the week, visit R Bar for karaoke (Wednesdays), free food (Sundays and Mondays), and a DJ (Tuesdays).

The place has kept previous inhabitant Baron’s Café’s rustic look: exposed beams and bulbs that hang from the ceiling, with votive candles at wooden tables providing a soft glow.

A little back alcove is perfect for late-night snogging, and the fact that the bar’s not filled with lecherous old Irishmen pawing every female in sight is a blessing. That tradition is being kept alive instead by the neighborhood hipster boys.

One of our favorite Bedford-stop bars. Brooklyn Ale House is completely lacking in pretense and attracts a surprisingly hipster-free and tourist-free crowd.
